Finding Balance During Your Flow

Updated: May 20

This week I’m sharing something that feels especially close to home—gentle tools for hormonal balance and relief during the menstrual cycle. If you’ve been feeling flat, emotional, or in physical discomfort during your flow, I see you. I’ve been there (in fact, I’m right there as I write this), and I want to offer a few subtle yet powerful practices that have helped me feel more grounded and supported during these intense times.

💫 Honouring the Challenging Days

Recently, I’ve been navigating some menstrual health challenges that have left me feeling depleted, foggy, and with physical discomfort—complete with migraines, fatigue, and emotional overwhelm. Add to that a funeral of a dear family friend in the midst, and it’s safe to say my body, heart, and energy system have been working overtime.

But life doesn’t pause for our cycles. On days when I need to show up and be productive, I rely on tools from energy medicine and yoga that help me move with my cycle, not against it.

These practices aren't about pushing through or pretending everything’s okay—they’re about meeting yourself with compassion, presence, and awareness. It’s part of the subtle way.

🌿 Practice #1: The Rooster Comb Hold (Hormonal Balancer)

This gentle hold comes from Donna Eden’s energy medicine practice and is a go-to for calming emotional storms and balancing hormones.

How to do it:

  1. Rub your hands together and shake them off to release stagnant energy.

  2. Interlock your fingers.

  3. Place one hand across your forehead, near your hairline.

  4. Place the other hand over the crown of your head, across the centre line (not the parting, but the midline of the skull).

  5. Hold for at least 2 minutes. Breathe gently.

This position connects with key neurovascular and meridian points and helps bring the body and mind back into coherence. I love using this in longer-held yoga poses, like Pigeon Pose or Savasana. It’s one of the tools we use in the Subtle Energy Yoga classes.

🌙 Practice #2: Lower Back Massage (Release Congestion)

During the heaviest days of bleeding, I often feel a deep ache in the lower back—specifically around the second chakra and the Ming Men point (a powerful energy gateway just below the kidneys).

Here’s a simple self-massage technique that helps relieve stagnation and discomfort:

  1. Interlock your fingers and place your hands on your lower back.

  2. Begin circling your hands in a counterclockwise direction over this area.

Energy enters the body clockwise and exits counterclockwise, so this movement helps disperse stuck energy. I make wide, slow circles, imagining the tension and pain being drawn out and released.

Afterward, I often use my knuckles to gently massage around the kidneys, stimulating blood flow and energy movement. This can be deeply soothing and often creates a sense of lightness in the area.

🌷 Practice #3: Energetic Clearing in the Field

This is a subtle but powerful way to release pain without even touching the body.

  1. Hold one hand a few inches off your lower abdomen or back—wherever you feel discomfort.

  2. Slowly move the hand in a counterclockwise direction.

  3. With your other hand pointing down toward the Earth, imagine creating a circuit—drawing pain out and grounding it through the Earth.

This technique can be done anywhere on the body and is especially useful when you’re too tender to massage directly.

While these tools won’t make every symptom disappear, they’ve helped me feel more centred, present, and capable of riding the wave—rather than being swept under it. They’re not just physical—they support your emotional and energetic body as well.

If you’re in the midst of your own challenges, I hope these practices offer a moment of peace and reconnection with yourself.

With love, gentleness, and grounded presence,

Anna
